Israel's Wall essays Israel began building a barrier through its country for the fear of a Palestinian attack, namely suicide bombers. This combination fence and wall is planned to run more than 200 miles forming a separation barrier between Israel and the West Bank of Palestine. Israel claims this wall is necessary to stop bombings, but is being called an apartheid wall by the Palestinians, and is linked to the aggression and oppression of the Berlin Wall. Palestinians are complaining the wall cuts deep into its land, and many problems are arising, such as the citizens troubles: as many as 400,000 Palestinians are harmed by the barrier, as it cuts families off from their villages, jobs, fields, hospitals, and relatives. Also, many Palestinians find themselves in a bizarre no man's land separated from their village by the wall and fence, and enclosed by more fences that cut them off from the Israeli settlements. An example they give of someone living in this no mans land is of Hanni Omar, whose house is completely enclosed by 25 feet concrete and wire fences. To get to his own farm, or send his children to school, Hanni has to travel 30 feet to unlock a gate in the fence the Israeli officials constructed. He is quoted by saying, Not only do I live in a jail, but I am my own jailor. Everyday, Palestinians come to Hannis gate and beg him to unlock it so they can go through. He always refuses however, recalling that the soldiers would destroy his house if he ever let anyone, apart from his own family pass through. On the other side of the wire fence lives an old neighbor of Hanni. They used to be quite friendly to each other, but since the fences were constructed, they hardly ever have a chance to socialize anymore. On an early morning, Hanni and his 4-year-old son planted a row of 20 trees between his house and the wall. They hoped someday that the trees would grow and block out the sight of the awful wall.
